The Robert Half FTSE 100 CEO Tracker

See how the FTSE CEOs got to where they are today and how the most common route to the top job in FTSE 100 companies has changed.

How have the career paths changed to becoming one of Britain’s top bosses? Is having a financial background still the key to success, or is a technology background the way of the future?

The FTSE 100 CEO Tracker slideshare highlights the key findings from the annual Robert Half FTSE 100 CEO Tracker including the career paths, educational background, age and nationality of the FTSE 100 CEOs.

Key findings include:

  • The proportion of FTSE 100 CEOs with a background in technology has increased by 27% in the last year.
  • CEOs with a financial background has seen a resurgence with over half (52%) in 2018, compared to 40% in 2017.
  • Company experience continues to pay off as nearly half of all current CEOs (46%) were appointed as a result of an internal promotion.
  • Diversity among CEOs remains mostly unchanged including age, education and woman at the top.

For a snapshot of the results view the slideshare above. Alternatively, we have offered a more in-depth analysis in our FTSE 100 CEO tracker press releases:

“Today’s CEOs require a changing blend of skills and experience to successfully lead their businesses into the future, with backgrounds in technology and finance equipping an increasing number with the ability to do so. This is a trend that is increasingly becoming a focus for executive and senior leadership hires within a business as well – especially when coupled with invaluable softer skills such as communication, adaptability and resilience."
